Response to: I just bought some cut-up St. John's Wort herb and some empty capsules (size "0") to fill. But how many capsules should I take per day?

The standard dose for St. John's wort is 300 mg three times per day (900 mg total). You may need to get a small gram scale to see how many miligrams each of your capsules contains.

Response to: I would greatly appreciate any information on "hives" is there any herb that will help this.

Hives are often caused by either an allergic reaction to a particular food, medication, pesticide, or other substance or they can also be a reaction by your body to stress. Of course, the best remedy for hives is to figure out what is causing them and eliminate that trigger. There are some wonderful herbs for soothing irritations of the skin such as calendula, chamomile and lavender. These and many more are discussed in our information packet on herbs for the Skin. We also have a packet that addresses herbs for Anxiety/Stress that may be helpful if your hives are related to those causes.

Response to: I am very curious about Kava Kava,Horse Chestnut, Ester C, Dandlion, Ginger, Saw Plamento, Bilberry, Borage Seed Oil, and Flax Seed in the oil form and ground up pure. I know alot about these supplements but I do not know enough about there side effects. Do they cause yellowing of the teeth, can you take them all the time and every day like I do 2x daily once in the morning and at night. Horse Chestnut will it cause more veins to appear on your legs or will it really truely keep them from appearing. I am 33 and love taking supplements because of the great benefits. But if I am taking them for long periods like years, will this cause bad side effects. I am scared that somethings that are so good can then really be bad in long run. I pray not. Please direct me in the right direction I am in search of and would love some advise. Thank you, Christine

Hi Christine. These are all very important questions. I am always glad when individuals like yourself seek to educate themselves completely on the products they take, and HRF is here to help you educate yourself on the safety and health benefits of herbs. Some herbs can and should be taken long term (i.e. 6 months or more) for the most beneficial effects. Others are only recommended for shorter durations, but it is completely dependent on the herb in question. Horse chestnut helps support the health and integrity of veins and keeps them from bursting, which causes the appearance of "spider veins". I am happy to tell you that HRF has a book that will answer your questions on kava, horse chestnut, ginger, saw palmetto bilberry and flax. We also have packets available on borage and dandelion that are not covered in the book. Please click the links for more information.

Although there have been no conclusive studies on Saw Palmetto for the prevention of hair loss, it could be theorized that this herb may help since we do know that Saw Palmetto helps reduce the amount of DHT in the body. DHT is produced in larger quantities in the body as men age and is thought to be responsible for causing BHT (benign prostatic hyperplasia) and for killing hair folicles. For more information, see our packet on Hair/Baldness.

I am planning a plantation of various Thai Herbs in Mookdahan, North Eastern part of Thailand. I do not know the markets, how Thai herbs are perceived, and if this is a good chioce. Most of the information available on Thai herbs is historical and anecdotal. Perhaps if more studies are conducted on these herbs we will see more acceptance of their use worldwide. Response to: Dear Fellow Migraine Sufferer, I have suffered from severe migraines for many years. Nothing that the doctor gave me seemed to help. Sometimes he couldn't even find a medication that would touch the pain of the migraine. None of the prescription medicines did anything for the other symptoms that accompany a migraine. I began herbal study first as a hobby and then seriously as my life path. I developed an herbal migraine remedy that addresses all the symptoms of migraine headaches. After self treatment with this combination for almost a year I am now nearly migraine free. If I do get an occasional migraine it is not nearly as severe or as long-lived. Most of the time I do not have them at all. Before I began self treatment for the migraines I would average 3-5 severe migraines per month with each lasting a minimum of 4 days. I would like to share this blessing with as many fellow migraine sufferers as possible so that they can become pain free as I am and enjoy a better quality of life. Response to: Can you recommend someone who knows something about Hypophasphatasia? Your body does not assimilate calcium and it causes micro fractures among other things. Terrible pain. Medical community does not know what to do.....

These types of conditions often require a wholistic (whole body) approach for the most effective treatment. I recommend that you contact an alternative health care practitioner, ideally one that has experience in treating this condition. Here are two organizations that can provide referrals to practitioners in or around your area:

American Herbalists Guild: www.healthy.net/herbalists

American Association of Naturopathic Physicians: www.naturopathic.org

Response to: Hi! A few years ago I had a bad case of recurrent uveitis/iritis (inflamation of the eye). I tried using some herbs and also some homeopathic eyedrops which worked in clearing up my condition within a few days. I now get this condition very infreqently and it is gone within 1-2 days when it does occur and I use these remedies. The trend before was that the flare-ups were occurring frequently (only a few weeks apart) and would take weeks for it to subcide using perscribed steriods. I would like to try and find someone to research these remedies in the "proper scientific way" so that my claims won't be refuted by the medical community, i.e. with double blind studies and controls for the "placebo effect". If my self remedies could be proven to help others it would be great because the steriods commonly perscribed for this condition often have negitive side effects such as early cataract formation, increased eye pressure (glacoma), acne and ect. Any ideas on who I could collaborate with to get this scientifically studied and taken seriously?

It's great that you have found some alternative therapies that really seem to work for you. Facilitating a clinical trial on herbs can be quite difficult and costly. You may want to contact the National Institutes of Health (www.nih.gov) for more information. You may be able to convince an herbal product maunfacturer to fund the study for you.

Any help will be deeply appreciate. We don't have a lot of money so need also to know costs involvement. Thanks

Seizures are difficult to treat herbally and otherwise, especially if the cause is unknown. We do offer a couple of different information packets that you may find helpful: Epilepsy and Anxiety/Stress. Both of these packets discuss herbs that can help support the nervous system, which is affected in seizure disorders. Sometimes seizures are can be caused by food allergies. You may want to consider an elimination diet to see if this is the case. Some common food allergens are: dairy, wheat, corn, soy, white sugar, peanuts and shellfish.

That is fine but one thing he has found at a health store recently and wants to "try" is a pill called "Viagrin" (sp). It is billed as the natural answer to viagra. I know he is not impotent, but he says he wants to "last longer". I am concerned that these medicines could be dangerous to him. My brother who is 26 has also expressed his interest in using this magic pill. They both hope that they will have longer erections and be able to keep going. I am concerned for their help. I have worked with herbs before but these new things are a little confusing and I wouldn't want them to become harmed from using them. Thanks for your help.

One thing we often forget when discussing our sexual health is that sex is more than just physical; it is also very much mental and emotional. In order to have a healthy sex life, we must maintain health in all these areas. Many of these new products touted as herbal alternatives to Viagra are designed to stimulate and increase circulation. These effects may not be recommended for individuals with certain health conditions like heart problems, high blood pressure, and hyperthyroidism. We do offer a comprehensive packet of information on Sexual Vitality that discusses a variety of herbs that can be helpful in supporting sexual health. Click the link for more information.

Response to: Can anyone explain to me how herbs should be prepared? Specifically: Does heating (as in cooking) deplete the medicinal benefits from herbs? Should they only be prepared with a process that keeps them raw? Ersky Freeman allaboutenzymes.com

Herbs are commonly found in various forms: liquid alcohol extract (tincture), powdered (capsules and tablets), ground/cut (tea). Some plants are better when used fresh, as their potency diminishes during drying and are often tinctured fresh. Others maintain their potency when dried. It is often dependent on the herb in question. Cooking can deplete some of the beneficial medicinal compounds-much the same as cooking vegetables- but it isn't always necessary to use only fresh or "raw" herbs, and it is not always convenient. For more information on using herbs as medicines, I recommend you look for a book by James Green called "The Medicine Maker's Handbook".

There is no evidence that Kava interferes with fertility in any way. Your friend may have been referring to a study that misrepresented some information regarding a few herbs, although Kava was not one of them. There was a question regarding Echinacea and fertility on this board previously. I will re-post my response for you:

Response to: I am writing in regards to Echinacea. A friend has said it is known to cause infertility in men. how much truth is there to this statement? Please enlighten me because I currently take Echinacea and it seems to help in combating the commmon cold....

The information you are referring to comes from a study done a couple of years ago, in which reproductive cells were directly subjected to large amounts of herbal extracts like Echinacea. The study claims that some herbs caused disturbances in the cells, however this study was not conducted in a living organism, nor did it take into account the chemical processes these substances are subjected to once ingested into the body. We believe there was a needless and unfounded public scare regarding this study. You can read our official response to this study here: http://www.herbs.org/current/fertilitystudy.html There are many studies that show that Echinacea is both safe and effective. HRF does offer a comprehensive information packet on Echinacea. Click the title for more information.

Response to: I would like info on all of the types of gensing, and what one is most fresh and benificial, there are a couple of them ,but what kind is best,I think it is the white siberian gensing,Am i right? T.Y. sincerly,A.S.A

The three main types of ginseng used are Asian or Korean (Panax ginseng), American (Panax quinquefolius) and Siberian (Eleutherococcus senticosus), which is not a really a true ginseng. When Panax ginseng is cured, it is known as "red ginseng" and becomes more potent. Uncured Panax ginseng is known as "white ginseng". These plants are used as tonic herbs to support the overall health of the body and need to be taken for a duration of time (usually several months) for the most beneficial effects. Each of these different types has different actions, so it is not a question of which one is best, but which one is best for you. Fortunately, we have a lot of solid research on these plants to help you educate yourself about the actions and benefits of each so you can decide which would be the best choice for you. You may want to purchase our information packets on ginseng and Siberian ginseng or our book, the Encyclopedia of Popular Herbs. You can also read articles about current resrarch on all of the ginsengs on our News Pages.

Response to: Hi, I was wondering when the best time to harvest St. John's Wort is? And when should the different parts be harvested for the most potency

St. John's wort should be harvested when the plant is in full bloom before the flowers start to fade, usually during the summer in most areas. It is the top 1/3 of the plant that is used - leaves and flowers. It is best to use a pair of snips or garden scissors and to cut just above a set of leaves. If you are making a tincture, you should put the fresh clippings directly into alcohol for a potent extract. For best results, cut the plant material into small pieces and allow it to remain in the alcohol for at least 2 weeks before straining, shaking it occasionally. The tincture should be a beautiful deep red color when it is ready.

Capricin sounds like a product name to me. If it is a product containing an active ingredient from cayenne called capsiacin, then it may be a topical cream for relieving pain. We do have comprehensive packets of information on both Cayenne and Pain/Inflammation. Click the packet titles for more information. Acidophilus is one of many "pro-biotics", or beneficial bacteria living in our bodies, primarily in the digestive tract. We also have a packet of information on the Digestive System, which includes information on pro-biotics like Acidophilus.

Herbs that are high in silica like horsetail can help strengethen hair and nails, but the most important thing you can do to grow strong nails is to eat a healthy, balanced diet, drink plenty of water and get enough sleep and exercise. A healthy body promotes healthy skin, hair and nails. We do offer a comprehensive packet of information on Herbal Beauty Aids. We also have a packet available on horsetail. But these are some of the so called "herbs" they list: Dandelion Root, Damiana, Red Raspberry, Sabal (Saw Palmetto). Blessed Thistle, Kava Kava Are these really herbs?????

Yes! Dandelion, damiana, red raspberry, saw palmetto, blessed thistle and kava kava are all considered to be herbs/medicinal plants. We have packets of information available on each of them that detail their health supporting properties. For more information, click here. As far as their ability to enhance breast size, I will re-post my answer from a few days ago:

Response to: What can you tell me about herbal breast enlargement. Does it work and is it safe?

We get a lot of questions about this. There is little scientific research to support claims of herbal breast enlargement, though the anecdotal testimonials are many. Some herbs do contain phytosterolic compounds, plant constituents that are similar in chemical structure, though very much weaker, than hormones that are produced by the body. I do not know of any place to recommend that has reliable information on these "breast enhancement" products. The Herb Research Foundation sells an information packet on Phytosterols, (plant hormones) what they do in the body and in what plants they are found. Click the packet title for more information.

Response to: Can you give me any information regarding the effects of Gymnema Sylvestre (gurmar) on blood sugar levels? Does this herb also have an added effect of blocking teh taste mechanism for sweetness?

Gymnema sylvestre has traditionally been used in Ayurvedic medicine to regulate blood sugar levels in diabetes and other hypo/hyperglycemic conditions. Although its exact mechanism of action is still being researched, it is believed to perhaps increase the sensitivity of cells to insulin, or possibly to stimulate the release of insulin in the body. Gymnemic acid found in the plant inhibits the ability to taste bitter and sweet flavors, but it is not clear if this acid is responsible for the blood sugar regulating effects. For more information on this plant including dosage information and research conducted on Gymnema sylvestre, you can purchase our information packet on Diabetes.

Eero, thank you for your kind words about our site! Swedish Bitters is actually the name of a digestive aid formulation/product. As far as I know, there has been no conclusive research performed on this particular formulation, however bitter herbs have a long history of use as digestion promoters. You may be familiar with some of the bitter herbs used to promote digestion: gentian, goldenseal, wormwood, and hops are just a few. Cravings for particular foods-including chocolate-are often the body's way of telling you that you may be lacking in some essential vitamins and/or nutrients. The best way to alleviate cravings of this nature is to eat a balanced diet that includes plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits and limits processed foods, as well as drinking plenty of water, and getting proper exercise and plenty of sleep.

Response to: Hi I wondering where I could find research on why herbal remedies are not as widely excepted as pharmaceuticals?

The question you are asking is really more a matter of opinion. Many of those who oppose the use of herbal medicines say there is no scientific evidence to validate the safety and effectivness of herbal medicines. This is untrue, as you can see for yourself by reading the scientific articles on our News Pages. Other opponents claim that herbs and other dietary supplements are unregulated, which is also untrue. Herbal supplements must adhere to the safety guidelines set by the FDA and the labeling guidlines of the Dietary Supplement Health Education Act (DSHEA), which our president, Rob McCaleb, helped author. Response to: Hi! could you enlighten me on the safety profile of eugenol in pregnancy? thanks a lot!

Eugenol is a major component of the essential oils expressed from bay leaves (Laurus nobilis) and the buds of cloves (Eugenia caryophyllata). Oil of cloves, an over-the-counter remedy, gives temporary relief from dental cavity pain because of its eugenol content. Eugenol is a very strong substance and should be used with caution during pregnancy or not at all. It is best to seek the advice of your health care practitioner when considering the use of any substance during pregnancy. We do have a packet of information available that lists both herbs that can be helpful and those that should be avoided during this delicate time. Click here to read a summary of the information contained in this packet.
