Texas is first state to require new ephedrine
labeling
In September, the state passed a new rule requiring that labels
for all diet products containing ephedrine must carry a federal
toll-free number for consumers to use in reporting adverse reactions
to the FDA. Critics of the new ruling are concerned that the toll-free
line is understaffed and may not be able to handle the calls that
result from the new labeling requirement. An FDA spokesman countered.
"The FDA is confident that the Medwatch reporting system
would be able to handle the calls that might be generated by this
regulation." Associated Press, September 7, 2001.
