Polyphenols and platelet aggregation: a closer look at the health
benefits of red wine
Results from epidemiological studies suggest an inverse relationship
between red wine consumption and mortality from heart disease. The health
benefits of red wine have been attributed to increased levels of healthful
high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. Some of the compounds in
red wine may also inhibit platelet aggregation, which is known to play
a role in the development of coronary heart disease and hardening of
the arteries. This review article briefly summarizes the current research
on the health benefits of wine phenolics, presenting evidence that wine's
antioxidant capabilities may not be the only mechanism of action responsible
for decreasing the incidence of heart disease
