Anti-inflammatory activity of Padma 28

Padma 28, an herbal combination used in traditional Tibetan medicine for anti-inflammatory and other effects, caused a significant inhibition of inducible nitric oxide synthesis in tests utilizing a mouse macrophage cell line. In humans, inducible nitric oxide synthesis (iNOS) is associated with infectious and inflammatory disease processes and is responsible for the vasodilation and hypotension observed in cases of septic shock. The authors suggest that inhibition of iNOS "might contribute to the anti-inflammatory effects of Padma 28." Saussurea lappa and Terminalia chebula, two of the herbal ingredients in Padma 28, inhibited iNOS by decreasing iNOS protein and iNOS mRNA levels when assayed separately.
