NNFA offers GMP certification
Amid recent negative media reports concerning
the quality and purity of dietary supplements, the National Nutritional
Foods Association (NNFA) is publicizing its third-party certification
program for manufacturers of supplements. Although the Dietary
Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 allows the FDA to
issue and enforce manufacturing regulations for supplements, the
agency has not yet done so. In 1997 the FDA did propose guidelines
for industry Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), on which the
NNFA had based its program's requirements. Manufacturers who meet
NNFA's standards for cleanliness, staff training, equipment maintenance,
record-keeping, and handling of raw materials may display the
Association's GMP seal on their products. PRNewswire, June
