House OKs DEA control of gamma butyrolactone (GBL)
On January 31, the US House of Representatives passed the Hillory J.
Farias and Samantha Reid Date-Rape Drug Prohibition Act, which allows
the Drug Enforcement Administration control over the dietary supplement
GBL. The legislation places GBL in a regulatory category similar to
a prescription drug, making it easier to restrict its distribution.
The supplement has been widely available over the Internet, despite
FDA requests last year that distribution cease.
