Dutch study finds that black tea protects against heart disease

According to a study published in the October 10, 1999 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, consumption of one to two cups of tea daily is associated with a 46 percent lower risk of heart disease. Risk was reduced by 69 percent when individuals consumed four cups of tea per day. The study involved 3,454 people in the Netherlands who were free from cardiovascular disease. Researchers are not certain why the cardio-protective effects were more visible in women than in men. These findings lend further support to a study conducted earlier this year which found a 44 percent lower risk of heart attack in those who drank a cup or more of tea daily.
