a dangerous drug.

On May 15, the
Texas Board of Health approved rules that would classify ephedrine as
a dangerous drug and require prescriptions for most dietary supplement
products containing ephedrine sold in the state of Texas. If finalized,
the restrictions will take effect in October,1998. The Texas Department
of Health said it has received more than 1,200 reports since 1993 of a
wide range of adverse effects associated with the "misuse and abuse"
of ephedrine. The state action comes not long after an FDA proposal to
prohibit the marketing of dietary supplements containing 8 mg or more
of ephedrine alkaloids per serving. |
