Bill to restrict the distribution of genetically engineered foods introduced

US Senator Richard Durbin (D-IL) has introduced a bill that would require FDA to approve new genetically engineered (GE) foods before they can be marketed. FDA will be charged with ensuring that GE ingredients are just as safe as their conventional counterparts. The bill would also give FDA authority to review genetically engineered botanical supplements, should they be developed. Food Ingredients Online, Oct. 13, 2000.
