Profile: 19 Degrees East Natural Products
(Pty) Ltd. (Continued
from previous page)
An
equally important focus at 19 Degrees East Natural Products
is to research and supply promising but lesser known African
herbs, such as Sutherlandia frutescens and Hypoxis
hemerocallidea. Known in Afrikaans as kankerbos” (Cancer
bush), Sutherlandia has been used by traditional
healers for treating internal cancers, although research has
not yet confirmed its effectiveness. South African star flower
(Hypoxis) has a long history of use for
prostate problems and other health concerns. Researchers from
Europe and South Africa are currently studying its effects on
the immune system.
After
five years in South Africa, Davies expresses a genuine love
for his adopted country, a passion for his business, and optimism
about the future of sub-Saharan Africa. “We do have huge problems
with HIV-AIDS, poverty, poor educational systems and other issues.
But I believe that we also have many unique opportunities in
terms of botanicals, climate, and infrastructure,” commented
Davies. “ Through trade, we can improve many people’s lives
while offering the highest quality natural products that are
sustainably produced and untainted by pesticides and pollution.”
